We start by showing you a white elephant left over from the 2012 Olympics and also see the site of the second largest non-nuclear explosion in the history of the world. We also get a great close-up view of the Thames Barrier before heading over a massive dock bridge which gives amazing views of the Royal Victoria Dock, the spectacularly sited City Airport, Excel Centre and a huge abandoned old mill. The elevator up and down this high bridge is often out of order so you need to be fit if you want to ensure seeing the best views of the airport, but there’s an easier route around, rather than over, the dock if you want an easier walk. We also see some huge old cranes before having to choose between taking the Emirates Cable-Car (extra charge; not covered by oyster or travelcard) for a scenic ride over the river to Greenwich, or we can take the DLR (travelcard or oyster required) two stops to East India Dock to see the only lighthouse on the Thames and a great little dedication to Michael Faraday. Either way we get great views of the 02. The cable car takes us right to it, whilst the lighthouse section takes us along the river immediately opposite the 02, during which we also see a fine memorial to the first settlers of the New World, who left from that spot.
