Gentrification, Georgian Squares Islington, Trendy Islington, Trendy Kennington, Trendy Lambeth, where MPs live
This walk takes you north and south of the river with a short tube ride in between. You start with the only place in London so far designated “super-gentrified” – Islington. You see where Prime Ministers Boris and Tony used to live, and where many other MP’s still make huge profits from their second London homes. There’s trendy coffee culture, beautiful squares and a canal, but also a history of poverty, rehousing and renovation.
Then it’s off to Lambeth to see how the Georgian houses that were tenement slums when Charlie Chaplin lived here are now once again charming “sought after” properties. There’s also a workhouse that has been converted into an amazing pad on Grand Designs, and other lovely streets to stroll around, which were once very far from lovely.
