You are told the story of the Krays whilst walking around their “manor”. You see where they lived, the school they went to, and the famous boxing club where they had great success. You then hear all about their more lucrative career as gangsters, and are shown the pub they bought for their old Mum, which still has photos on the walls of the twins. You also see where Reggie got married and the cafe where the twins used to have breakfast, and which was used as a location in the film Legend. Then it’s on to one of their favourite pubs, where they were drinking when word reached them that George Cornell was having a beer just down the road. You head for the Blind Beggar, passing another couple of pubs with Krays connections, en route. On arrival at the famous pub, you’re told about the murder that took place there, and also the murder of Jack the Hat, and the Krays’ eventual downfall. Throughout the walk you see plenty of fascinating photos, and you also hear about tasty geezers such as Mad Frankie Fraser, the Richardsons, Frank Mad Axeman Mitchell and Brown Bread Fred.
Start Shoreditch High Street Station
Finish Blind Beggar Pub or Whitechapel underground station
NB: If you’re a fan of the two Krays films, you can do a slightly longer walk, starting at Hoxton station, from where you’re shown a couple of locations used in the films.
